“As any parent in that situation will know, the feeling of the unknown is hard to describe.”

This Father’s Day, Gus Saunders, Cleaning Manager at St Helier Hospital, is taking on the iconic London to Brighton Cycle to raise money for Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Charity, with a heartfelt focus on supporting the Neonatal Unit that cared for his twin daughters.
Gus only recently joined the Trust in March this year, but his connection to St Helier runs much deeper. A local resident for many years, he’s proud to now be a part of the hospital team, and even prouder to be fundraising for the unit that means so much to his family.
In January 2024, Gus and his fiancée welcomed twin girls Sadie and Sienna- born two months early. The next four weeks were spent in the Neonatal Unit at St Helier Hospital, a time Gus describes as overwhelming but deeply reassuring thanks to the care they received.
“As any parent in that situation will know, the feeling of the unknown is hard to describe.”
“I cannot fault how the girls were cared for- or how we, as parents, were supported and educated. We were included in every aspect of their care, and that helped us go home feeling ready as a family of four. We will always be grateful.”
Combining his new love of cycling and his desire to give back, he’s taking on the 54-mile bike ride from London to Brighton. He’s completed it once before in 2023, but says this year feels even more meaningful.
“I was definitely fitter last time, so I’m a bit nervous. The added bonus? My babies will be waiting for me in Brighton on Father’s Day. That cuddle at the finish line will be all the motivation I need.”
By riding for Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Charity, Gus hopes to raise funds for the Neonatal Unit at St Helier Hospital, helping other families receive the same exceptional care he experienced.
“To anyone who donates- thank you. Your kindness means everything. Seeing the work that goes on in the Neonatal Unit first-hand will stay with me forever. It’s incredible. Supporting that work by making a donation will make a real difference for other babies and parents who find themselves in our position.”
