Fiona takes on the Abseil St Helier to say thank you
When Fiona signed up for the Abseil St Helier, it wasn’t just about conquering her fear of heights. It was her way of giving back to a hospital that has cared for her family for generations.
Fiona’s connection to St Helier Hospital began when she herself was born there, and later she gave birth to all of her children too.
In recent years, her youngest daughter has been under the care of the Dermatology Team for severe eczema. As part of her treatment, she requires regular blood tests every three months – something she finds very difficult.
“Everyone is so calm,” She said. “The teams are always so supportive, including the Play Team who distract her with bubbles and all the fun things. What should take 10 minutes sometimes takes much longer, but they never rush us and always take the time to help.”
Earlier this year, Fiona’s daughter became seriously unwell after developing shingles and alongside her eczema, she was admitted to the ward at Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children.
Reflecting on the experience, Fiona praised the care her daughter received from staff across the hospital including the Emergency Department.
“The staff in A&E were phenomenal. The night team on the ward were amazing – so kind and compassionate. Even at 3am, the nurse caring for my daughter was incredible. I felt so confident that she was safe.”
Following the experience, Fiona decided she wanted to give something back and signed up for the Abseil St Helier challenge, despite being afraid of heights.
“After everything they did for us, I felt there had to be something I could do to help the hospital. I’m excited but nervous!”
Fiona, who also works for the NHS as part of the Merton Community Teams at Central London Community Healthcare, hopes the funds she raises will help support patients, families and staff across the Trust.
